Bangladesh's IT exports to Japan jump 35% in FY2022

Bangladesh's software and information technology enabled services (ITES) exports to Japan have been remarkable. This is largely due to the fact that local companies have established a foothold in Japan.


According to the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), IT exports to Japan jumped 35% year-on-year in FY2021/2022 from just about $56 million in FY 2016/2017 (July 2016 to June 2017) to $120 million in The figure was achieved.


The following is a summary of the figures covered in the local press.


Japan accounted for 8% of the $1.4 billion in total IT exports.

Japan is one of the largest IT markets in the world, with an estimated market size of $44.9 billion in 2021.

As of 2023, 103 companies export IT services to Japan, of which 23 export directly and 80 export indirectly.

The strengths of Bangladesh's IT industry include an increasing number of graduates in the IT field, a young population, affordable and competitive prices, and the availability of training cooperation between the two countries.

The diligence, high quality (of human resources), and commitment of local engineers are business opportunities to develop the Japanese market.

On the other hand, barriers are language and lack of direct flights; need to learn from Vietnam, where Japanese language skills of IT engineers are high, and focus on Japanese language education. In addition, direct flights from Dhaka to Japan are essential to promote the entry of companies from both countries.
