On June 5, INPEX (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo) announced its investment in Terawatt Technology (headquartered in Milpitas, California), a US startup developing next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
According to the announcement, Terawatt is developing next-generation lithium-ion batteries that are significantly smaller, lighter, and have a higher capacity than existing lithium-ion batteries and can be driven safely, with the aim of commercializing them. INPEX aims to link this to INPEX's decarbonization-related business.
In its "Long-Term Strategy and Medium-Term Management Plan (INPEX Vision@2022)" announced in February 2022, INPEX has set "promotion of carbon recycling and development of new business fields" as one of the five net-zero initiatives, and is working to develop new businesses in the clean energy field through collaboration with domestic and foreign start-ups, universities INPEX will continue to fulfill its responsibility to develop and provide a stable supply of energy, while actively working to reform the energy structure in order to contribute to the realization of a net zero carbon society by 2050.
