Nissan and Renault Announce Future Alliance and Focus Areas in India

February 09, 2023

Nissan, Renault Group, and Mitsubishi Motors announced on February 6 a new framework of initiatives to strengthen the alliance of the three companies. Projects that will create high value in terms of business will be implemented in Latin America, India, and Europe.

On January 27, 2022, these three companies announced a roadmap for strengthening the alliance among the three companies, which revealed a focus on electric vehicles (EVs) and connected mobility. This announcement, made about a year later, outlines the specific regions of focus and initiatives in each region.

In India, Nissan and the Renault Group plan to collaborate on several new model projects, including a new sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a new model derived from the Renault TRIVER, with a view to export as well as domestic supply in India. In addition, the launch of EVs for the Indian market will also be considered.

At the same time, on January 19, 2023, Maruti Suzuki, Suzuki's subsidiary in India, began exporting SUVs from a port near Chennai (see January 25, 2023 article). Also in the Sri City Industrial Park near Chennai, Daikin Airconditioning India, a subsidiary of Daikin Industries, is currently constructing a plant to produce air conditioners and other products. Products produced here are expected to be used for export. If new exports from Nissan Motors, which manufactures in Chennai, are added to this, South India's presence as an export base for Japanese manufacturers may increase in the future.
